چکیده

We discuss constraints on which flat directions can have large vacuum expectation values (VEVs) after inflation. We show that only flat directions which are not charged under B-L and develop positive pressure due to renormalization group effects can have large VEVs of order MPl. For example, within the MSSM only the HuHd flat direction is found to be viable. This strongly constrains the embedding of a broad class of inflationary models in the MSSM or some other supersymmetric extension of the SM. For flat directions with negative pressure, the condensate fragments into very large Q-balls which we call Q-giants. We discuss the formation, evolution and reheating of these Q-giants and show that they decay too late. The analysis requires taking into account new phases of the flat directions, which have been overlooked in the formation and dynamics of the Q-balls. These constraints may be ameliorated by invoking a short period of thermal inflation. The latter, however, is viable in a very narrow window of parameter space and requires fine tuning.

Q-balls in the Mssm

A Q-ball is a stable, charge Q soliton in a scalar field theory with a spontaneously broken global U(1) symmetry . The Q-ball solution arises provided the scalar potential V (φ) is such that V (φ)/|φ|2 has a minimum at non-zero φ. In the MSSM such solitons are necessarily part of the spectrum of the theory, as was first pointed out by Kusenko . This is due to the form of the MSSM scalar potenti...

MSSM Dark Matter Constraints and Decaying B-balls

In the MSSM, LSP dark matter could arise from the decay of B-balls rather than from thermal relics, with a quite different dependence on the MSSM parameters and a natural correlation with the baryon asymmetry. We discuss the constraints imposed on the properties of B-balls and the MSSM spectrum by experimental constraints and show that B-balls cannot form from an Affleck-Dine condensate with 10...

Supersymmetric D-term Inflation and B-ball Baryogenesis

We consider the B-ball cosmology of the MSSM in the context of D-term inflation models where the reheating temperature is determined by the Affleck-Dine mechanism to be of the order of 1 GeV. We show that such a low reheating temperature can arise quite naturally as the result of a symmetry which is required to maintain the flatness of the inflaton potential. In this case the B-balls will decay...

Recent Progress in Affleck-dine Baryogenesis

In the MSSM, cosmological scalar field condensates formed along flat directions of the scalar potential (Affleck-Dine condensates) are typically unstable with respect to formation of Q-balls, a type of non-topological soliton. I discuss the creation and growth of the quantum seed fluctuations which catalyse the collapse of the condensate. In D-term inflation models, the fluctuations of squark f...
